I just realized that I bought a Haswell chip instead of the (I believe) newer Skylake i7 chip... Did I make a big mistake?

I bought from Newegg and I think I don't think I'm able to exchange it....

What chip did you buy? What motherboard do you plan to use it on? If the cpu and motherboard are compatible, you didn't make the most egregious error, because at least you can have a computer that works. If the board you ordered is for skylake and not haswell, then yeah, you made a big mistake. Has the cpu been taken out of the box, put onto a board and had thermal paste applied? Then you probably won't be able to return the cpu. Have you contacted Newegg about your error?

I read the return policy closer, it looks like I probably can return it. I'll call them tomorrow... I got the Asus Z170 and it looks like its a 1151 socket and the chip I bought is a 1150... Dumb mistake.

If I had $1 for every dumb mistake I've made...I'd probably spend it on beer, and still wouldn't be any richer. :) Yes, you need a Skylake LGA 1151 to go with the Z170 board. Newegg is a good company to deal with. I seem to buy most of my parts through them and Amazon. Usually the best prices, the best selection of parts, and good return policies. Best of luck with the rest of the build.
