Is the i7-4790k better for gaming than an i7 6700k or i7 5820k?

Pure gaming, the 6700k is the best. 4790k is pretty much the same. 5820k is the best CPU but it has lower clock speeds and higher amount of clocks which is good for other tasks but not gaming because games don't really utilize all those cores.

But if you overclock the 5820k it can match teh others and you have 2c/4t for better threaded games or things like streaming/recording.

I have a i7 4790K

It is totally fine and it requires haswell which already may have, and if you want the new ones then you need a skylake board. Whenever you get a new board u will need a new OS.
