Hello,
I am unable to find a straight answer and everything I've read doesn't seem to work.
For 1.5 years I used a portable HDD Smartdisk Firelite 76GB to transfer movies (mp4, mkv) from my PC to view on my Panny Viera TC-P65VT30 plasma TV. The drive was formatted as NTFS. FAT32 never worked on the TV. Recently my Firelite died. I tried my WD My Passport metal edition 1TB which I use to back up everything from my PC. I tested the video files out on the Panasonic TV and it worked. I did not want to do a lot of file backing up and swapping around,so I got another WD My Passport-- Ultra edition 1TB but it is NOT "seen" by the TV. It is also formatted NTFS and works on my PC but it's not recognized by the TV. I've swapped USB cables, the WD adapter cable, reformatted the drive again but the TV still fails to recognize the WD. The drive does power up with lighting and I can hear it running.
I used a small 16GB Sandisk thumb drive as another "test" formatted in NTFS and the TV recognized it, but each of the files would freeze up during playback at some point.
Any suggestions/solutions are appreciated. I've wasted hours and hours trying to figure this out!

Hello,

Just got a SanDisk Ultra Fit USB 3.0 Flash Drive with a 64GB capacity. It was originally formatted with FAT32, but I re-formatted to NTFS. I loaded a few movies and TV videos and it's working perfectly with my Panasonic TV.

Hope this helps anyone having a similar issue that I had originally.
Hey there, avflight3.

Sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing.
It's difficult to give you a straight answer as this sounds like a really unusual behaviour.
I'd also recommend that you download DLG (Data Lifeguard) and run both tests (Quick and Extended) to make sure that the drive is in a good condition: How to test a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows.

Other than that, there might be some sort of issue with the TV's USB port since it has a problem with a flash drive as well.

Please let me know how everything goes.

Hi Boogieman,

Thanks, it seems that my WD Metal edition works, but not anything else. The Ultra is the same disk size (1TB) as the metal edition so it seems like it should work. I haven't been able to find any information about the maximum HDD that the TV can handle. Since the Firelite 76GB (5V, 500mA) worked in the past for a long time, I tried that 16GB thumb drive thinking maybe size was an issue. It froze as I mentioned earlier. A very old thumb drive of 512MB that I had worked (not that anything is useful at such a "Small" size these days). I'll look into the DLG when I get a chance and let you know.
Thanks for your suggestion!

Well I'm not sure what could have caused it. Judging by the tests, the drive is in perfect condition. And since the TV has had issues with different drives while working with other and does the same with different flash drives as well - I'd say it might be the USB port as already mentioned, or there might be something in the programing which prevents it from being able to recognize one storage device over another. Can't be sure though.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful with this issue. :(
