PSU Problems & Upgrading the GPU

Some time ago I upgraded my gaming PC rig with some new parts and I have started to experience an error that completely shuts down my PC. This error generally occurs when playing high end games such as BF4 and GTA V where after a few minutes of having the game open, the entire PC will black out. After checking the logs it appeared to be the Kernel error 41 in which a loss of power caused the system to shut down. The PC turns on again with no issue and there doesn't appear to be any long term damage. I have already troubleshooted this by testing my RAM, temperature and the socket. The 2 sticks of RAM are both functioning and the huge NH-D15 keeps my rig ice cold even whilst playing those games. Changing the socket neither had an affect. I have contacted the PSU company who are willing to exchange it for a new one but I want to know if perhaps 650W is enough and especially as I'm planning on getting a new GPU.

Secondly I was planning on upgrading to the GTX 980 but with the recent addition of the 1070 I am stuck between spending the extra £100. Any help, especially to do with the PSU, would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Any possibility something other than the CPU is overheating? Run HWMONITOR which can track maximums.
What case do you have? If the PSU is bottom-mounted, make sure the PC isn't nestling down into carpet and smothering its cooling airflow.

What PSU brand is it? A Major brand 650 W PSU is more than enough for your rig. I wouldn't buy the 980 myself if I had an option, a £100 is £100 but if you wait till mid summer we'll see some settling of these prices.

Thanks for the input, I was hoping not to return it but I will and hope that it fixes the issues. Thanks again!

Even with a new GPU that would not be an issue?

Your current PSU is well enough made and overpowered enough you wouldn't gain anything by swapping imo. Any brand of PSU can and does fail. That's why servers have redundant PSU's. Buying decent features mean when do fail they don't take your system with them.

While choosing a great PSU to start with is critical I notice folks here are constantly over buying what they need.

If you are buying a new one, then by all means, seek advice on the latest and greatest.

Okay so today I got my PSU back, for some reason I was sent a 750W G2 PSU instead of the original 650W, I also bought 16GB of HyperX Fury RAM (2*8GB) and still the PC decides to turn off. I've spent the entire afternoon building it checking the connections meticulously and I have no ideas from here...

I am using a brand new NZXT H400, it has pretty big feet which keep it of the wooden surface and I will check the temps but I'm sure it's pretty low even in load due to the huge CPU tower cooler.

Okay so after checking around I decided I would reset my BIOS and chipset and then installed the newest versions again, for some unknown reason after reinstalling them the issue disappeared. I haven't had any errors after doing this but I don't see why the first time I installed them it didn't work properly.
