Brand new 1TB SATA3 hdd being added to existing 160GB boot drive and 1TB 2nd drive.

I have 1 available SATA slot so I hooked it up as normal and...... nothing. The hard drive appears to whirr but doesnt appear in BIOS and windows boot actually crashes.

BIOS shows the last SATA port is empty and therefore available? (0=optical, 1=boot hdd, 2=1TB 2nd hdd, 3=empty)

Motherboard is M2N68-LA
aware that only supports SATA2 but should be able to function right?

Is there something else I can check before I send the new HDD back as faulty?

Many thanks in advance

just as a test, remove the connections for the other drives from the mobo and plug the new drive in by itself with a cable you know works into the port currently occupied by your primary disk and see if it shows up in bios.
