Hi guys, im new here but know the website because it helps me alot via google searches when i have problems :D

Anyway my psu died yesterday, its was a 750w but i was wondering if i could get a 650w for my pc because its cheaper and i dont think i need all that power as i dont overclock or run xfire/sli.

My pc is:

FX8350
R9 290x
16gb ddr3
Samsung evo 250gb ssd
1tb hdd

My build is a few years old now and i dont plan on upgrading until next year so dont want to blow more than £50-60

Thanks

i'm seeing an average of about 275w or so for the card in a gaming scenario. and well over 300w for stress loads!! depending on if and how high of an oc you have on the 8350, i'd stick with 750w just to be safe.

here are a few models that would all be solid units but only a bit more than the xfx 650w blackbird linked http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/products/compare/antec-power-supply-tp750c,evga-power-supply-210gq0750,rosewill-power-supply-capstoneg750,super-flower-power-supply-sf750p14xehx/

you got some power hungry parts there. the 290x can hit 300w depending on the model and the 8350 is easily 150w with a small oc. throw in the rest of the system and 550-600w is not hard to imagine for your system at a gaming load. not sure i'd go with 650w knowing this. 750w would give that extra bit of headroom to be sure the psu is not overworked leading to an early grave.

would need to know 290x model to be sure of it's power usage

A PSU is a form of insurance. You want clean electricity being delivered to your components. The R9 290 requires 31 Amps on the 12v rail & a 550W PSU minimum. They grade PSUs these days. From generic to 80+ and then all the way up to 80+ Gold. You then have the wires to think about. WOuld you like to have to stuff excess wires behind your motherboard or would you like to toss them in a bag? With this https://www.amazon.co.uk/EVGA-GOLD-Modular-Power-Supply/dp/B0100QRVP0/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1466194647&sr=1-1 being fully modular your will have a cleaner case and with the 80+ Gold rating on the PSU you know you are buying a quality product. No, it isn't £50-60. It is a little more, but isn't your custom rig worth it:D?

Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation:

AMD R9 290 - On your average system the card requires you to have a 550 Watt power supply unit.

http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/radeon-r9-290-review-benchmarks,10.html

A 650W allows some extra overhead(think safety margin).

The 80+ is NOT a quality rating it's only an efficiency rating. There are PSUs that are gold rated that are poor quality, and there are Bronze rated units that are really good quality.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/80_Plus
The EVGA G2 in your post is a good PSU, I just needed to clear up the confusion on what 80 plus is.

Thank you for that clarification. I did use the wrong word.

Thanks for all your replies guys, means alot, you guys know alot more than me. Will take the advice and i will probably buy a 750w 80+ (maybe gold) just to be safe side and also might not have to upgrade the psu again next year when i upgrade (although i probably will :D )

Thanks again
