This is very very very confusing for me and I would appreciate it if someone could help with my questions and help choose the best package.

(Pricing is Canadian)

- For gaming on max settings/streaming to Twitch.

At first we were looking into paying $3200 for the Area 51 which came with a GTX 980, i7 6800K (X99 Express Chipset), and 16GB Ram.

Then we saw the new Alienware Aurora (we customized to upgrade the video card) for $3000 it comes with GTX1080, i7 6700K (Intel Z170), 16GB RAM.

If we want to add a GTX1080 to the Area 51, it will bring the price up to $3700.

So that's $3700 Area 51 vs $3000 Aurora, main difference here being the processor and chipset. On the Area 51 I can switch the GTX 1080 to a 1070 to bring it down to $3450 but my OCD tells me to just go for the GTX1080 (is GTX1070 a lot less powerful?).

(We can also edit the Aurora's processor to make it an i7 6700 (non K and without high performance liquid cooling, Intel Z170) for $2600. So that's $400 less for non K, there are a few other minor changes like DVD instead of blueray, storage, etc.)

We really would prefer the Area 51 for the design and name but I can't tell if it's worth it or not. Is the $2600 Aurora a lot less powerful than the $3700 Area 51? (Main difference being the 6700 vs 6800K (and the chipsets)

So I just pretty much need to know, out of the two Auroras, which one would you rather pay for ($3000 vs $2600)? and from that choice, would the Area 51 with the GTX1080 for $3700 be a viable choice? What about the Area 51 with the GTX1070 for $3450?

Money isn't a major issue here but I would prefer to only pay a higher price if it's really worth the power increase.

I know this is a confusing thread, sorry and thanks a lot for the help.

Alienware in particular gouges customers blind. I've found other companies (Digital Storm, Cyberpower) are *better*, but only to the point where they make 50% margins instead of 100% margins.

My advice: Shop around, and don't spend hundreds of dollars for an extra 5% performance.

EDIT

Was just able to slap together a DigitalStorm Apollo with both the 6800k and 1080 GTX for just under $2600. Literally just took the second best Apollo and slapped a 1080 GTX in there. I'm sure if I played with the configurations a bit I could get the price down a bit more, but it makes the $3000 options from Alienware look a lot more overpriced.

Point is: SHOP AROUND and don't just pick Alienware because they are the "most known". I'm my...
For gaming, there's not really a difference between the 6700K and 6800K, because both are overkill for today's games. The 6700K has a slight single-thread advantage (generally more useful for games), while the 6800K has 50% more cores.

Just for reference:

6700K - $350
GTX 1080 - $650
16GB DDR4 - $80
512GB SSD - $150
Z170 motherboard - $100
Good power supply - $100
Windows 10 - $100

Total: $1530

The Area 51 would be about $100 more expensive if priced for parts.

Double price seems a pretty steep markup to me.

He is talking Canadian prices, but you are still right the price is still quite high.

Here is a part list (quite overkill imo) that includes everything that you need, plus you can get some cheap rgb lighting for definitely under 100$ for all the lighting. Still cheaper than the Area 51.

The Aurora is just a better deal all round. The 1080 is twice as fast as the 980 in some benchmarks and will have a much bigger impact on games than any of the processor choices mentioned. Even a 1070 & 6700 non K combo would game better than the Area 51 in a great number of games as the 1070 is a little faster than a 980Ti.

The Area 51 is maybe better if you are multitasking a lot or doing CPU intensive tasks but will not game better.

Personally I would have a custom PC made by a PC store before I'd buy Alienware and pay extra for the brand name and admittedly cool design. But in reality I just build my own.
