I am currently running my PC with GTX 470 GPU along with a Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU, I was debating over buying a GTX 760 or 960 (depends on prices), or putting off and just buying the CPU and the GPU altogether. The main answer I want is that how much will upgrading my GPU without upgrading my CPU actually help support gaming.

Solution
Use CPUZ and see if your CPU is a B3 or G0 stepping. The G0 is much better. If you have B3 I would suggest a Q6700 which are all G0. They used to be very expensive but are neglected now. Just kicking the FSB to 1333 will get you 3.33Ghz. (with al ittle more voltage of course). But money spent on the GPU will give the most results. See what PCIe power cable you PSU has. If none then GTX750Ti, if 6 pin GTX950, and 6+2 then GTX960. Or factor cost of new PSU into GPU upgrade. You could OC what you have and add the GPU now, then ugrade to Q9550,Q9650 later and overclock one of those.

You want to run 1080p right? Whats your PSU and mobo? if your PSU can take a 970 and you could get get a decent overclock on that processor. Your going to be at the low end of 1080p for new games.

here is a guide to ocing your cpu

if you on the low end of funds I would get a used 970 and psu(if yours dont have the watts) and just game on that till you can upgrade your cpu.

Well if you can wait two weeks you could get AMD's new RX 480 which should use a similar amount of power and be much faster than them actually closer to the speed of the 970 or 980 for the price of the GTX 760/960. Nvidia's Pascal based (1000 series) low end chips will come out eventually but as far as we know at this point in time that won't be in the near future given no rumors on a release month or quarter.
