Hi, i have hdd which got some bad sectors, i found bad sectors with sector checking tool. it seems physical bad sectors because i dropped out this drive by mistake.

After found bad sectors, i tried chkdsk /f /r on this drive... but canceled because i found some articles that chkdsk can make data loss (i know data on physical bad sectors are already damaged.) in some case.

So i wanna know just this about my case, my situation is... i canceled chkdsk after ran about just 10 mins and 3 stages are passed without error report.

And the last status was - Stage 4: Looking for bad clusters in user file data ... Progress: 7113 of 91843 done; Stage: 0%; Total: 0%; ETA: 12:11:05 - no error or bad clusters/sectors reported in this status window until the time that i closed window.

So i asked this to some people, people answered if chkdsk didn't report error or fix or any problem, nothing happened in drive.

But i am worried about that if chkdsk already loss my data but without bad sector counts or reported. no any errors reported while running chkdsk at least. everything was fine, i know it. but i feel worried.

Some people seems having similar issues with chkdsk, i just make clear that data loss can happen or not, by chkdsk, in 'this situation'. please help.

Solution
hard to say it may ''fix on the fly'' or collect and fix at the end its just Microsoft is not clear on any of that all they give is for the most pat base info on how to use it and that's about all .

like said if its bad its bad from the get go anyway all dick check is going to do is salvage what there and move it to a good sector in the end regardless the damage is done before the disk check even started

good luck
''i found some articles that chkdsk can make data loss '' reason why it can from here

''If any of the files uses a sector which is marked as 'bad' by disk utility then the bad sector of the file is remapped to a free sector and any unreadable data is lost. To avoid file corruption data recovery methods should be performed first if bad sectors are found (before being marked) by OS at file system level.''

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_sector

''Bad sectors can often be corrected by using a spare sector built into the drive. However, any information written to a bad sector is usually lost.''

Thank you for answer. i tried copy all data to another drive already, just one folder was unable to copy (guess this is data on bed sector), all others are already moved.

But my point was that, does chkdsk can remove or fix files without report on status window? because i tried copy to other drive after cancel chkdsk.

So if chkdsk can ruined any folder structure or files without report already, i will be in panic. so i wrote this.

''does chkdsk can remove or fix files without report on status window?'' you may need to dig around for a Microsoft article on that ? for what I know is after the disk check is done running you then get the report but it has to finish [ ??? ] there maybe a log file but I don't have a clue on where it is if there even is one

well ? its not that disk check ruined thins it that you got good data in a good sector that now went bad - bad is bad so it more then likely was corrupted then and there ..

like guys who get hard drive issues and want to clone there old drive ??? all you did was clone all the issues / bad / corrupt files as well [opinion]

I already checked about log files, but i confirmed that "canceled work" doesn't make logs. that was one of reason that i asked here because no clue for judge that chkdisk didn't do anything with data until 10 minutes running, so now i am waiting answer about this from microsoft supporter. :) again, thank you for trying to help.
