Is a i5-2400 good enough for moderate gaming (with some decent upgrades)?

Hi all,

I'm just looking to upgrade my computer to a moderate level in order to do some occasional gaming. Quick story is I bought the hype (and the game) for the Total War Warhammer game that recent came out. However, my desktop is not going to run it and I thought - no problem just upgrade it! Well it is a Dell Optiplex 7010 SLIM case and those are very hard to find any sort of PSU to go above 240W and thus get a decent graphics card in it (I am running a Geforce 8400 GS).

However, being a graduate student and family man, money is really tight. So to appease the wife, I said I would look at getting something refurbished or off craigslist that has a bigger case which I can switch a few parts around to make it something that I can play a game or two on at a cheap price. I found a Dell optiplex 790 which is a larger case with a i5-2400 3.10 GHz processor ($125). It has 4GB DDR3 with two open slots (I already have a 8GB to add to it) and 500GB Hard Drive. It's graphics card is a integrated one, but it has an open pci and pcie slot. My plan is to pop something midlevel (Geforce 700-MAYBE 900 if I can get it past the budget commission :D) in and then replace the PSU midlevel (400-600w) as well as it is currently only 265w.

The question really is, am I going to be throwing money down a black hole here for no purpose or should my plan actually work? Again, not looking to build something crazy but just something that gets the job done for a tight budget.
