How to change hard drive?

My laptop reports a SMART error, the hard-drive needs to be replaced. The backup utility reports an error which won't go away, but I have all the important files backed up.

The laptop has space for a other hard-drive, so is it possible to just swap the contents of the original drive with a new drive somehow, and then remove it?

Also, the computer is very slow because I think the Hard drive is operating in a slower mode, which windows triggers. Is it possible to boost the speed back up to the normal operating speed?

Solution
You MAY be able to clone the drive (retail HDD's usually come with the software). Just be aware that if the HDD has already failed, then it may not be able to clone successfully and your only other option is to re-install everything onto the new hdd.

Be aware that time is precious when a drive starts to fail. I use Easeus Todo Backup Free for backup, and a lot of folks use Macrium Reflect which also has a free version. What I did when my hard failed was to make a full system backup, replace the old drive with a new one, then do a restore onto the new drive. I don't trust the Windows supplied backup software.

Good luck.
