Wireless Adapter VS Router

So I've been having a situation with my wireless adapter. I had a rosewill RNX-N150PCe adapter, but just recently the speeds that ive been getting from it have been really slow. I figured it was dying out. So I had this Linksys usb adapter (AE2500) that I used to use a while back and I started using it in the mean time while I ordered my new PCI adapter. Everything was going fine with the USB adapter as far as speeds go ( I stopped using it because it losing connection frequently ).

Fast forward through shipping time.

I now have my new PCI adapter (its the ASUS PCE-AC56) and I have it installed. Had a little bit of trouble getting it to connect to the network but ended up getting everything working. The problem is, when I was using the USB adapter I was back up to my normal 20Mbps download speeds. But with this new PCI card im struggling to get 10Mbps and its inconsistent.

What I think has happened is I purchased an Adapter that is better than/incompatible with my router. My router is pretty old and outdated at this point and the max data rate is 54Mbps.

TL;DR: My Question is, Is it worth me buying a new router? If so, which router should I get?

Thanks in advanced for any replies, and if this is super simple to fix than sorry for the long thread. Dont know a lot about networking...

20Mbit is REALLY good for a wireless G router.

Was the USB adapter in the same location as the PCI card (i.e. plugged into the back of the PC) or were you using front USB ports?

Your card should revert to compatibility mode with your old router. You definitely can't use 90% of the capabilities of that card with your old router.

I have used the USB adapter plugged into the front/back/and even the usb port on my K70 keyboard, all yielding the same results. 20mbps Down.

And the 20Mbps down is what my current internet package allows through Time Warner Cable but they are supposed to be upgrading there packages soon. My package is supposed to be bumped up to 100Mbps down, which is another reason id like to upgrade my router.
