I'm building a budget gaming PC and I can't decide which CPU to use.

The AMD Athlon X4 860K has a relatively high single core performance but a low total performance, the AMD FX 6350 has a lower single core performance but a higher total performance, and the FX 8320E has an even lower single core performance but also an even higher total performance.

These are the Passmark scores of the CPUs;

CPU - SC - MC
FX-8320E - 1350 - 7450 (X8)
FX-6350 - 1480 - 6940 (X6)
Athlon 880k - 1510 - 5550 (X4)
Athlon 860k - 1600 - 4890 (X4)

I've learnt that most games are unable to use up to eight cores, in which case single core performance is more important than total performance, as long as the processor has enough cores. I'm trying to pick the processor that delivers the most gaming performance, but I don't know which one is better. Which processor would be the most suited for gaming?

Also, I figured that the AMD 880K should be better that the 860K, which is true in total performance, but not in single core performance. Could anyone explain this to me?

None of the above. Get an Intel. Less heat, less power, and plus, a 4460 will pretty much have better price to performance than the best AMD CPUs.

However, if you still want AMD for some odd reason, even with the reasons listed above, an 8320 will probably be your best choice.

Why in a thread where the OP asks directly and simply which AMD CPU is the best for gaming do we find answers to get Intel?
I mean, he doesn't ask "which CPU is the best, Intel or AMD" like so many here. He doesn't ask a comparison between Intel and AMD.
He even gives a list of CPU to choose from...
I have nothing, nothing at all against this forum or Intel, but it seems so Intel oriented, there isn't one single post in favor of AMD...
People know that you can have an AMD config and be very happy with it?
Damn! I'm sure I'd ask which beer has the best flavor, someone would answer an i3!

OP: I'd get a 8320e and overclock itif you get the proper motherboard for it.

I've recently got an FX6300 and it's great for multitasking and it loads my games reasonably quickly. I used to have a Phenom II X4 945 and it was just a little slower than the FX6300, so if you can, go for the most expensive, if not the Athlon 860k will do an excellent job considering its single core performance.

Most games don't take advantage of more than 4 cores or at least it's usually not worth it having more than 4. That's why the i5 4th gen has 4 cores and it's considered to be the best benefit-cost ratio in the market today for heavy duty games(if you're willing to spend that money).
