Windows recognizes RAM but BIOS does not.

Recently I bought two new 4GB RAM sticks for my computer. Before, I had two 1GB sticks and two 512MB sticks to make a total of 3GBs.

If I have only the 4gig sticks installed and I try to turn on the computer, the tower turns on and all the fans are spinning but the monitor is not receiving and signal and as far as I can tell it does not boot up.

If I have the two 4gig sticks and the two 1gig sticks installed, the computer boots up fine but does not use the other 8gigs. When I open system information it says that I have 10 gigs installed but only 2 gigs of total memory. When I open the BIOS is says I only have 2 gigs of memory.

I have tried updating the bios which did not seem to change anything in the menu, I have tried moving the sticks around (I have four slots total) and that does not seem to matter.

System Specs:
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium SP2
Model: Inspiron 518
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
Installed Physical Memory (RAM): 10GB
Total Physical Memory: 2GB

Any help with this is appreciated.

Solution
The 4 GB modules most likely are not compatible. Most sites claim that your system is limited to 4 GB (4 x 1 GB modules), but 2 GB modules for a total of 8 GB apparently works.
