Broken motherboard thermal sensor? Anything to do but replace the board?

Hi all,

I noticed my CPU fan has been running loudly and near-constantly on my desktop, ignored it because I was going to upgrade the CPU & fan anyways in the near future, and then was chagrined when the darn thing kept up the noise anyways. That, combined with some restarts under higher workloads, pushed me to look at the temperature. Speccy, Corsair Link, and HW Monitor all show that my motherboard is running at 123C, which I don't believe is accurate. All other temperatures are in normal ranges. There's no excessive heat on any components and nothing has melted into a puddle.

Is there anything I can do to fix this reading short of replacing the motherboard? It's a stock board from a Lenovo Thinkcentre Edge 72, if there's any other relevant information I'm leaving out, just ask! Thanks for any advice!

Hi, thanks for the reply! I ended up replacing the board, and it solved my issue - temperature readings are normal now which is nice. To clarify for future readers, there was no accumulated debris in my unit and I'm not sure exactly what board it is. It's definitely an mATX board from Lenovo, N1996. Not sure if that...

If you're looking for an option outside of replacing the motherboard, then you can try and see if there are any BIOS updates available for your unit to help alleviate your issue. Speaking of BIOS, can you please pass on your current system's specs? The manual states 3 different form factor while all have the same mATX board. If you can open up your system then perhaps see if any debris has accumulated in your unit.

Not sure if that helps or not, but that's all that's basically printed on it. I had tried updating the BIOS previously and there were no updates for my board. Replacing it was the only solution I found and it did solve my problem.
