Native resolution causes black screen

TLDR; Monitor won't let me set resolution to 1440x900 when it's 100% a 1440x900 monitor. Plugged into a VGA to DVI converter. Other monitors work fine with adapter and my gpu.

Whenever I switch to my monitors native resolution of 1440x900 it turns black and makes a screeching sound. I've tried forcing a custom resolution through AMDs additional settings, but it tells my my monitor is incompatible with this resolution. I know this to be false since I've had this monitor for years displaying it at that resolution.

The problem started when I realised my refresh rate was set to 60hz, when it's a 75hz monitor. It's usually on 75, has been for years...but I checked my settings and something caused it to default set back to 60, and wouldn't allow me to put it on 75hz. I noticed my monitor had also changed names...From samsung 943etc to Lontium HDMI (it's plugged into a dvi port through a vga adapter) I thought maybe it was driver issues, so I uninstalled my graphics drivers, tried to install the new ones...had an error (related to windows not being updated) I updated to windows 10, installed the new drivers. Same issue. Forced the refresh rate to 75 in AMDs additional settings, and that was that. Resolved the issue for a while.

The issue was resolved until last night, when I tried to play a game super sampled to 2k (higher resolution in this game gives a broader view, done this a million times no poroblem) and my monitor went black. When it came back on, my monitor had a message overlay saying "not optimum resolution, recommended 1440x900" I set it to 1440x900, and the same message appeared. The resolution was set to 1440x900 but looked square on my screen. I restored back to windows 7, tried to set the resolution to 1440x900 and now it just goes to a black screen. I made sure all my drivers are clean etc. Got the right monitor driver installed too, shows up in the device manager as the right one, but still recognised as a lontium hdmi in AMDs settings and my resolution adjusting settings. So now I'm stuck with my monitor forced to display 1280 x 1024. which looks very stretched and weird on this monitor.

I've tried different vga cables into the adapter and same problem. I've replaced my monitor with a smaller one, setting the native resolution is fine on that. No issues and is identified as the right monitor. The only thing I can imagine that happened is, my monitor tried to display 2k downscaled at 75hz and it caused it to fry something? I'm clueless.

Any help would be appreciated. Sorry for the long post.

Solution
Sorry to hear none of that resolved this for you. I am pretty much out of ideas at this point.'

I do suspect the adapter is the problem there, but I cannot prove it from here.

Let me know what happens with the new cable.

Sure. Slipped my mind.

r9 290x
intel i5 4690k
the monitor is a syncmaster 943nw VGA going through a vga to dvi adapter. (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00C93JQXS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

To add to this, I'm typing from this monitor now...Displayed at 1920x1080p. One of the few resolutions that work currently.

Apologies

After going to windows 10 I restored back to windows 7 ultimate 64bit when it didn't resolve the issue. There's a little more detail in the post about that if it's relevant.

First thing to try is to look for a CD that came with your monitor. On that CD should be a driver folder that most likely contains a ,INF file (if you can see the extensions). If you cannot find that CD, then go to the web page for your monitor. You will be looking for a downloadable .INF file that most monitor/TV companies call a driver. Windows uses that file to know what resolutions and refresh rates are look valid.

Find that file, download it into its own folder, and then go into the device manager, select your display, and update the driver file. Reboot, and things should let you set the correct settings again.

Hey, thanks for your time to suggest a solution.

I've installed the drivers before this through an exe file, I've tried looking specifically for the inf but samsungs website only offers an executable to install the drivers. My monitor in the device manager is listed correctly, but under resolution settings where it says "Display:" it has "Lontium" where as it used to accurately say my monitors name. If I go into advanced settings from my resolution settings, and click the monitor tab, it's also correctly labeled as samsung 943nw

Edit: I'd also like to mention I've cleanly reinstalled the monitor drivers multiple times, as well as trying variations of the same drivers. All the same result =/ I don't own the CD either, I've owned this monitor for 4 years. Might be somewhere but no clue

The cable was causing the image to look a bit poor, so I replaced it with a newer one and it was fine. I've tried other cables since this problem started, and it's still the same issue =/

The EXE shows my currently installed driver, and the samsung driver to replace it with. Then my monitor is listed correctly under device manager.

It's a Samsung syncmaster 943nw VGA. Quite old.

Thanks again for your time.

I have 2 ideas at this point. The first one is the easiest, and should not do any harm. Go into the Device Manager, select Display, find the Driver info, and click on the Rollback button.

After doing that, reboot, and when you get to the desktop, right click on the desktop, select Set Resolution, and then in the lower eight corner, it should say Advanced. Click on that and a panel with a Show all modes button will be on it. Click that button. See what settings are available there. It is possible that this panel might let you set a resolution and/or refresh rate that the other screen might be blocking.

Bare with me if these instructions are not perfect, I am using a chromebook at the moment, and i am working from memory. I recewntly had surgery on my shoulder, and an actually in a rehab center

Anyways, if the above does not fix things, I found something on the Samsung page that might help...

http://www.samsung.com/us/search/support/searchMain?Dy=1&Nty=1&Ntt=943nw

It should be in the upper left corner and show as the 943N... Click on that, and gthere is a download button to get the .EXE file. This might be a copy of the file you already have, or it could be a newer file, or it could be the qwrong file entirely. But I think it is worth trying.

Have previously attempted it, but I thought just to be sure I will follow your instructions. No luck unfortunately. I'm able to actually see the resolution 1440x900 in the settings, and under listed resolutions this device can handle...Just when I set it my screen goes black. If I try to use custom resolutions to force it, it tells me the resolution isn't compatible.

Your instructions are fine, and I'm sorry to hear that. Hope things clear up soon.

The drivers linked unfortunately are one of the 3 drivers I've tried, I tried installing those again anyway but same results.

Perhaps it's related to the adapter I'm using. I'm going to test a vga to hdmi converter when it arrives in the post to see if this resolves the issue. My monitor seems to think it's a 1080p monitor plugged in via hdmi...Even though it's plugged in via dvi through a vga to dvi adapter.

Thanks for your patience with all this, it doesn't seem to be a common issue. I had no luck researching this myself so I thought I'd make a post asking about it, see if I'm missing something. Never really encountered something like this.

Yeah, it has to come down to the adapter at this point to be honest. I'll consider this issue resolved since we've narrowed it down to a few issues. I appreciate the help and the patience. I currently have it set to a resolution that looks fine, no stretched images and fits the screen apparently. So it'll do for the time being.

I'm going to replace the adapter tomorrow, and I'm also going to try cutting some pins on my spare vga cable, and then forcing the resolution. See if that helps.....

Update

The monitor appears to be broken. Resolution support is constantly shifting, and even without it being connected to a computer, powered on...It makes a high pitch screech. All other monitors work fine with the adapter.
