Which one should I buy?

So, I was wondering whether or not I should buy an Asus Strix 980 from a friend (Who's used it since December) for £200 ($287) or buy a new 970 for £200

This may seem obvious but was wondering whether or not it was worth buying it since it's been used for 6 months already. Would buying a 970 be a safer option or should I just go with the 980?

Go with the 980. I think you'll find that it will last many years. Also sometimes a warranty can transfer to the new buyer so that card may still be under warranty depending on the brand/model.
