Want to upgrade to the gtx 1070 but not sure if my MOBO/RAM/CPU is compatible

I have an older build, I haven't upgrades in YEARS. My motherboard is a Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 , my CPU is an i5-2500k and my ram is DDR3 16gb

do I have to upgrade all these components or can I just go the "cheap" route by only upgrading my GPU? Will the GTX 1070 have any problems running on these older components?

No, it's not pointless, even if you aren't hitting 144hz at all times. A 144hz monitor won't screen tear while a 60hz monitor will, and even at something like 75hz can make a game noticeably smoother, we're just saying that you can't expect to take the full advantage of a 1440p 144hz monitor with just one 1070/1080 alone.

The only thing you need to make sure is that your PSU is good quality and can supply enough power, and that your CPU doesn't bottleneck. You will see a little bottleneck, depending on the game, but you could just OC your i5-2500k to something like 4.1Ghz to makeup for the frame loss. I would just upgrade to a GTX 1070 with that current setup :)

I don't know much about overclocking. My plan was to buy the gtx 1070 and then invest in one of those expensive 1440p 144hz Gsync monitor.s All I use my computer for is games so these seem like the smartest things to invest in.

I was going to upgrade my cpu/mobo/ram too but I thought about it and it doesn't seem necessary.

at 1440p a 1070 wont give you 144fps a 1080 is what you need for that if you want a full 144fps and im not sure thats going to do it
i would go 60hz 1440p or 144hz 1080p and a 1070 or 120hz and a 1080

That would depend on the game(s). Most modern games wouldn't benefit from it, but some older games like Tomb Raider (2013) might be able to achieve that.

a gtx 1070 is a great 1440p 60 fps card

a 1080 is the perfect 1440p card, ultra settings > 60 fps

i dont think either of them can handle 1440p @ 144hz alone in newer modern games at ultra settings

Are you guys saying its pointless to get a 144hz monitor if my games won't be hitting 144 fps? I thought those monitors were better than 60hz even if the frames weren't hitting 144fps.

I don't think there are any 60hz 1440p Gsync monitors on the market for me to buy even.

Why get a 1440p monitor when you can get the new Acer Z35 2560x1080p 144hz and run Nvidia DSR for better IQ? The VA panel is so awesome too, lower res is much easier to run.
