I have a stock core i7 3770k and I recently purchased the mentioned cooler. I have read only positive reviews for it so I decided to give it a go. After installation, I ran prime95 (v 26.6) tests and monitored the CPU temperature with RealTemp (v 3.70).

The idle temps are suspiciously high (around 40 C per core) and the load temps (using the prime95 test mode reach up to 65 C per core. I am a noob when it comes to PC hardware and CPU cooling and I am getting worried.
Are those numbers okay or am I doing something wrong?
What is the optimal quantity of thermal paste to put between the CPU and cooler heat pipes?
Should I run more sophisticated tests?

Solution
those temps are okay. intel temps are okay up to 80C. those don't seem bad for a i7 3770k for the 212 EVO. you want to apply enough, bu not too little paste. you want total coverage. use the X method. look it up

you also want to remove the sticky under the cooler. also make a custom fan profile for it to spin up on load.

but I mean 65C is cool for an intel i7 3770k
Here's the normal operating range for Core temperature:

80C Hot (100% Load)
75C Warm
70C Warm (Heavy Load)
60C Norm
50C Norm (Medium Load)
40C Norm
30C Cool (Idle)
25C Cool

idle is a bit hot though. make sure CPU load is at 0-1% only.
30.0C = 86.0F Hot
29.0C = 84.2F
28.0C = 82.4F
27.0C = 80.6F
26.0C = 78.8F Warm
25.0C = 77.0F
24.0C = 75.2F...

Solution
That's about how warm my mildly overclocked 3570K runs. At idle, I'm around 40c, with ambient temps around 26-27c, because I have a very conservative fan profile that keeps the fans spinning slowly until it hits around 60c. Load is in the range of 65c with something like Prime95, mid 50's under more typical loads.
