I was opening a commonly used excel file when the program malfunctioned. I did a force close from the task manager and when I reopened the program, the file was gone. The shortcut is in recent documents but the file is gone. It's not discoverable in a windows explorer search either. Please help!

That's the kicker, I thought it was saved to my dropbox folder, but no love. I've been opening from the recent doc tab so long I can't be sure it was actually saved to dropbox, although that is what the - now useless - shortcut indicates. Any other suggestions?

Look for a .tmp file from the time you have your Excel file open, about the same size as the file.
Aside from that, the file is gone, I've seen odd things like this happen and the only time I was able to get anything was from a temp file. Even then the data was pretty scrambled.
