Upgrading cpu from i5 to i7 with MSI z87 g43 motherboard

I am replacing my i5 processor with an i7 4790k. I have a MSI z87 g43 motherboard. I was told that when I put the new i7 cpu in it should start right up. That was not the case however. I put the new processor in and the computer was on. All the fans were working. The problems was there was no video. Just a black screen. When I put the old i5 back in the computer worked like normal. I am not sure what the problem is. Will have to get a new motherboard or is there a different solution?

Put the i5 in and then update the BIOS to the current rev. The i7 4790k is a Haswell refresh cpu and only works in Z87 boards AFTER the BIOS update.

Chances are that that board needs an
Bios update. A z97 should support it,mount a z87 since it is older, may need a bios update to fully support Haskell refresh. Try a bios update.
