So i have an i7 laptop that no longer works i decided to use the ram from that laptop which is a 4gb ram and put it in my i3 laptop which also has 4gb ram and i believe the mother board can handle 8gb's of ram but when i put it in and turned the laptop on it booted up but the display was black is this a compatability issue or something completely different?

Solution
It will almost certainly be a compatibility issue.
You should never mix DIMMs even of the same spec. Install a single 8GB kit if you wish to upgrade and keep the others for spares.
Sometimes 2 kits of the same spec will work with Bios Tweaks, but this is not recommended.

Although the ram was from a different laptop i now know for sure that it still does work in my laptop as i tested it out and i also know for sure that the mother board can handle 8 gb's of ram but i still have the same issue of a black scree n after i turn it on would you know how to fix this issue ive read that i might need to take out the CMOS battery and put it in again but i dont really want to open up my laptop

Sorry I have no knowledge of the workings of your laptop. I have a PC and clearing CMOS is simple.
You should refer to your manual or how best to go about removing the CMOS battery. It is a way of bringing Bios back to default values if settings have changed. I hope you can resolve your problem.
Why do you not wish to open it up?
Have you tested the ram at all using Memtest86+ or from within Windows? (as a single kit)
