I am looking for legitimate software that will scan my drivers and let me know which ones are in need of updating.

ALL of the ones I have come across are garbage.
Are there any real utility programs out there that will help me with this?
I would be most grateful to anyone who could point me to one ...

Yes.
Because any 'Driver Update' utility is going to get that driver from the exact same place. Except with extra weirdness and ads in the middle.

Why trust some 3rd party to tell you what you need, instead of the people who actually make the part?

so would you suggest I just go to my mainboards manufacture website and download what they have or look up every individual item and seek them out individually?
I went to my main boards site today and saw a few that I did a seek and install and they actually needed them.

If it's a pre built pc from a manufacturer and you havent changed any hardware most of them have their official utilities and these are the only ones you can trust since they dont bs you with adware and ads overall

Otherwise i'd recommend you get aida64 extreme edition, it shows all hardware on your pc even if device manager doesnt recognise it and it also shows manufacturers websites where you can get the latest drivers.
I've been using this since it came out and i'm very satisfied by it
However dont use the tool they advertise for downloading drivers or bios updates automatically and ull be ok
