Strange RAM + Mobo Situation

So i had problems with my PC today, couldn't get it to properly POST into Windows (still had access to BIOS). Ended up getting the problem resolved by trying out different RAM sticks from one of my friends. However, in doing so I ran into something really, really strange about my current MSI Z97 Gaming 5 board.

When testing the board with a WORKING 4gb stick of RAM, it ended up booting into Windows just fine. Same thing with 2 4gb sticks running in the proper dual channel configuration. However, when booting with a singular WORKING 8gb stick, it can't POST, not even to the BIOS, ending up in the restarting boot loop. This is an anomaly of a situation, again I know the 8gb stick works because it's actually running in my friend's computer right now.

I'm... pretty much stumped as to why this is even happening in the first place. More importantly I don't really know whether I should buy 4 4gb sticks or 2 8gb sticks for my replacement RAM. I'll post some of the details right here:

Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 5 (i7-4790k)
4gb stick that works with my board: G. Skill Sniper Series 4gb DDR3-2133
8gb stick that doesn't work with my board: G. Skill Sniper Series 8gb DDR3-2400

Did you check the MSI web site on the page for that motherboard to see if that exact part number on the G.Skill memory was listed as being compatible?

Memory and memory controllers have all kinds of compatibility problems. The companies have people that do nothing but sit there running memory through various compatibility testing. Only after memory successfully completes the compatibility testing does that part number get added to the list.

See, that's the weird thing. His board is also a Z97 Gaming 5. And his board works perfectly with the 8gb stick. That's what bothers me the most
Edit: My BIOS is the latest version by the way

that could be it, didn't cross my mind to reset CMOS before installing the 8gb stick. I'll probably try resetting CMOS when I buy a new set of RAM.
