I have a 3-year old WD My Passport 2TB. Yesterday, it worked fine until suddenly it failed when my computer was still on. I restarted and found its name had turned into local drive, without any available space written underneath. I could not click it either. Physically, my WD is fine. It doesn't give off any sound.

I tried several things and it all FAILED, simply because most programs and even Windows can't work properly when my WD is connected.
* Disk Management can't show the partition - keep loading virtual disk
* Right click at Local Drive gives no result - my computer keeps loading. Thus I can not format
* Scandisk & Fdisk via Command prompt can not check it - keep loading with blank result
* When installing software, it keeps computing disc space and stops there. When I unplug my WD, the installation suddenly resumes
* TestDisk fails to check my WD. it keeps loading with blank result
* The only software which works is Easy Disk Drive Repair. It claims it has repaired 9 errors and relocated several sectors. But my WD still fails.
* My PC can't even be turned off when my WD is connected. I have to forcefully unplug it.

Please help :(

If this is the bios died on the device there is no user way to save your data from what you describe you have to access the drive to get your data. I would call or email if they have that option WD and ask tech support if you send it back can they save the data. If you had a WD my book I would just tell you to dismantled the case and pop it in the PC. And while we are on this subject do not purchase an external hard drive enclosure. I had three of those and they both failed before a year. Sorry man if you had a pc tower case I would just tell you to get a hdd and install it as a backup drive that is what I do.

I tried EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard. It failed too. It kept scanning disc for hours without any success.
HDD Regenerator failed too. It keep showing me "Please Wait".
Active File Recovery failed too. As usual, it kept loading :(

Here's a nice tutorial about your problem.
Should tell you if you have physical damage and renew your MFT kicking out bad sectors (if they are a problem)

Note what it says in the article:
"This can take many hours, even days, to run on large hard drives bigger than 500GB"

@Qualtrox: I've tried Test Disk already. When I started, it told me "Please wait" and kept loading indefinitely :(

Yodot Hard Drive Recovery managed to read my broken HDD but when it came to recovery, it gave me zero partition. So it's a waste of time :(

3 years product warranty. But I really want to fix it myself because I will lose my data for sure. WD will probably give me new harddrive -,-'

I read about changing SATA card inside the enclosure. Can it work?

PS: My PC BIOS can still detect that WD. However, whenever most software, including Windows, wants to access it, it keeps loading forever.
