Mac doesn't recognize external hard drive with TimeMachine backup anymore

Hey guys!

I just ran into the following issue: after my MacBook (15" Mid 2010 running 10.11.5) was finished with the latest Time Machine backup to external hard drive before ejecting that drive I accidentally touched the USB-cable connected to one of the MacBooks USB-ports, which apparently caused a very short disruption of power to the drive (and OSX telling me that the it wasn't ejected properly). Unfortunately now, ever since this happened Finder doesn't show the drive anymore even after unplugging/replugging and rebooting. Also, with the drive attached both the boot and the log-on process take considerably more time than without and Disk Util freezes directly after opening it all while the external HDDs red status-LED keeps flashing permanently.

For testing purposes I also attached it to another MacBokk (13" white late 2008 running 10.8.5 MPF), where both the hard drive itself as well as the TimeMachine partition were at least recognized by Disk Util (which loaded properly as opposed to before). However, the TimeMachine volume was greyed out and the only options I had there were "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk", both of which failed. Actually, "Repair Disk" in the end just suggested to format, which I would like to avoid to be honest. Finally, when trying to boot from the TimeMachine volume, which is actually highlighted as one of the options when pressing ALT after the OSX startup sound, the Mac still loads the operating system from the internal drive.

My question now is: is there anything else I can try to avoid formatting and get the drive back up and running again?

Thanks for you support!

Daniel

Hey there, Daniel!

I'd suggest you attempt to connect your external HDD with a different USB cable and see how it will get recognized by both Mac systems. If you are unable to 'Repair Disk' through the Disk Utility, I'm afraid you should definitely consider reformatting the external drive and repeat the TimeMachine backup. I'd also advise you to run the Repair options from Disk Utility again after the reformat and see if the procedures will fail again. A mechanical hard drive is a rather sensitive piece of hardware, so a power disruption could potentially cause some physical damage as well. Be careful trusting your files with the external drive for now.

Let me know how the troubleshooting is going! Good luck! :)
