I have an external hard drive called the Maxtor one touch ll. It worked for a while after I got it then one day it would not show up in file Explorer! It showed up on other computers, and I could veiw in the Windows 10 Disk Management interface. I tried completely erasing it, then i repartition it and is still would not show up on my computer! I tried uninstalling USB roots and getting the software for it too but it still hated my laptop!
When I plug it into my computer I hear the sound that confirms that something has been plugged. I have no idea what to do now.

Solution
As the drive works just fine on another computer, then there is something wrong with your system. There's no need to take the drive out of the enclosure.

- How is the drive recognized under Disk Management?
- It could be a driver related issue. Update your USB drivers.
- Try using a different USB port. It could be some sort of a power related issue.

Hi there Mice960,

Is the external drive recognized by other computers? Sorry, it wasn't really clear.

In case it is, then I believe this could be driver related. My suggestion would be to go to your laptop's manufacturer website and update your USB drivers. Another thing you may want to check is whether the drive has a drive letter in Disk Management. In case it doesn't, then you assign one.

If the drive is not recognized by other systems, then you need to:
- Go to Disk Management and see how the drive appears over there. It would be helpful if you can provide a screenshot.
- In case the drive is not recognized over there, you need to attach the drive with a different cable.

Let me know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)

I can't because it's got pins instead of plates plus it's a laptop so I have to get a hhd to USB connector. Like I said it works fine on other computers
