graphics card overheating because of a problem that's hard to fix.

So...

I just bought a new Gigabyte R9 380X graphics card not too long ago, and i'm getting problem after problem with it. i finally realized that one half of the card was over heating, and what i thought was the fan not getting enough airflow, i moved it up. then it got worse. Why i moved it up in the first place was i got a very shitty PSU, and had to install it upside down, and because my card was 2 inches from the fan that was supposed to be upside down, both fans were trying to take air flow from the same place. That's why i moved it up, thinking that sooner or later, that fan was going to blow. i moved it up to give it more space, and the same half was still overheating. i tried to manually raise the fan speed to see if it would help, but no. Then i realized that maybe my liquid cooler (about 2 inches away, also) was keeping the hot air from exiting back.

I know this is long, but all of this is just assumptions. If i can, i will post a pic or two if you want me to.

Thank you.

if its heating up to the point of causing crashes and issue the cooler probably isnt on exactly 100% right on the side that gets really hot and causes issues what i recommend is that you return it for a new one. The card could also just be bad so just rma it on another note if you still can i would just recommend returning it entirely for an rx 480 which all signs point to it running faster and cooler than the r9 380x

i don't think i can. i have the receipt, but i already cut out and sent the URL on the box for my rebate. i dont know why the cad would be bad in the first place. it still runs really good. would i just be able to put another heatsink and/or get different fans? and what is rma? i never could find an rx 480 new anywhere, so i got the most fitting for the job.

First thing, don't use a "shitty PSU" unless you don't mind damaging the rest of your computer parts.

Second, how do you know half the card is overheating? Are you looking at the temps through HWMonitor or something similar? The card should have exhaust out the back where the backplate is, the liquid cooler would not be getting in the way of that.

Haha I didn't know it was that crappy until I bought it. No refunds. I don't know why, but my GPU only has one temp monitor and sometimes says 143°F once it crashes, and sometimes about 80°F five mins after. I don't have a good application for monitoring my system and temps. At the moment I'm using corsair link 4.

Well the GPU only has one video chip, so it would have one temp rating, not sure what you are talking about "half the card is overheating. Just because it has two or more fans on the heatsink does not mean that there is a graphics chip under each of those. 143 F is about 60 C which is well in normal temps for a video card. It's not overheating. First thing I'd look at is replacing the power supply with a good model.

Update your Motherboard's bios and try again. Which motherboard is it?

Was another video card installed before the 380x ? Uninstall the graphics drivers with ddu uninstaller and reinstall the AMD drivers from AMD.com

Which psu is installed now?

Upload pictures of your whole system to an image hoster and post the link of it

My MB is an asrock fatal1ty 990 fx. I already updated the bios on it once I got it (about 6 months ago, guess I should check just in case). I had an nvidia 8600 GT before this card that went to my old comp because my CPU doesn't have integrated graphics. My PSU is an apevia 650w. When I get the money I will upgrade to something with an 80+ platinum rating. Don't know how long that will take.

Unless you also want to end up buying a new video card, replace that power supply before you use the computer again. Even the cheaper Corsair CX models will be better.
Seems those things failed pretty much every test for several model ranges. From http://www.johnnylucky.org/power-supplies/psu-lemon-list.html
