I have a 6 years old laptop. An Acer Aspire 5542 with 4GB RAM, an SSD and AMD Athlon Dual Core 2GHz processor.

Currently it's running Windows 10, but I realized it's pretty slow on normal internet surfing.

I want to ask if it's a good idea to install the current version of Ubuntu on it.

Will it make my laptop faster?

There are a ton of other distros specializing on exactly that. If you go with Ubuntu i would pick at least another flavor. Lubuntu or Ubuntu mate. For the simple reason that the desktops on those distros are even less taxing than Unity. Or you could try Mint. It is based on Ubuntu, comes with different desktops and it is supposedly one of the best distros for beginners and old hardware.

Also i would preferably install the 14.04 instead of the current lts release.

One cool thing you can do with Ubuntu or Mint is flash them to a thumb drive using Linux Live USB Creator or Universal USB installer, then you can boot the operating system "live". This allows you to try it before you install it. It won't be quite as when it's actually installed, but it will allow you to kick the tires. I personally prefer Mint KDE Edition.

I agree with this entire post, very good advice here. I would not opt to try Ubuntu 16.04 with that old hardware.
