MSI GTX 1070 Reports boost clock speed of 1866 i thought it was only 1683mhz as standard?

I just got my MSI 1070 Founders through today :D and boy does it destroy anything i throw at it.

but when i checked msi afterburner for my temps n stuff i saw the core clock boost to a constant 1866/1835 ... now this is without ZERO overclock or anything from my doing and was just wondering why when it states that the cores are CORE 1506 / BOOST 1683 MHz

now not that im knocking it or anything im just a bit confused as to why its so high without me having anything to do with it.
Should i be worried?

Since Nvidia started to monitor power they have been able to fine tune each core they release for maximum performance. AMD does not quite do this the same they pick a speed(this means all cards perform the same) last time I checked, but this may have changed with newer cards.

More demanding games may not get the same clock speed.

Before this type of thing both AMD and Nvidia had to design cards with the worse case in mind and use conservative clock speeds in case a highly demanding game(or banchmark/stress test) would push the card way over its power limit(and thus thermal limits) and possibly damage cards.

I do not know how long you have been into computer hardware, but at one point Furmarks would make video cards take many watts...
Unless Nvidia changed something the Boost is different for each card. They tune them when the cores are made or installed on the boards. Many cards will get over the listed boost speed and some much higher. Some games will not clock as high and may run into the power limit first.

They call this the gpu(or silicon by some) lottery :)

This is also the reason why some cpus do not overclock as well as others even when they are the same model.

Really? bloody hell so i take its something to do with the Good Silicon inside it or something?? if thats the case i take it i should be Happy as Larry then :p

By monitoring or estimating the power consumption. A card can have the highest possible clock speed under different loads. As soon as you hit the power limit the card will clock down a bit at a time until it fall back into line with the factory limit. This is also why some games will clock higher than others. If a game is simply not demanding(and you have a frame rate limit like vsync or similar) the card may also clock lower just because it does not have to clock up all the way.

Just do not be surprised to see different demanding games have slightly different clocks. They clock may even play while you game.
