right now i have a evga gtx660 superclocked signature 2 2gb. if i were to sli would i need the exact same card? i was looking on ebay for gtx 660s and it would be cheaper for me to just get one and sli it. so what are the rules for mixing cards or can it not be done. do i have to have any 660 with 2gb or what?

EDIT

or should i get a 970 4gb

Solution
Just another GTX660 with 2GB of memory. Just make sure it didn't come out of an OEM machine to be sure.

SLI will run the cards at the speed of the slowest one, unless you overclock them after the fact, so ideally you would want to track down another GTX660 SC or better.

Still a better investment to upgrade though.

You can mix aftermarket brands of GTX660. There are some OEM GTX660 that actually used a cut down GTX670 and would not work in SLI with a standard GTX660.

A GTX670 would be a poor investment at this point.

Used GTX970 and GTX980 are flooding the market. $200 or so for 970.

Well, when you SLI with 2 GPU's....
The cards your using need to be the same, You cant SLI with a 660 and a 580 for Example. I'm pretty sure that
the cards need to be the same make as well (MSI,EVGA,Zotac)

You could probably get away with one card being superclocked and the other one not being SuperClocked, But don't quote me on that. I hope this helps.

Vendor doesn't usually matter. (There is one EVGA exception when they added their light SLI bridge for 900 series) Just have to have matching GPUs which is the caution I listed as not all GTX660 were created using the same GPU.

Use GPU-Z to check for GPU model. And verify a match using the SKU, if you can get it, of the card you want to purchase. (Assuming you haven't already)

GTX660
GK106-400-A1 (Retail)
GK104-200-KD-A2 (Some OEM)

I believe the newer nvidia drivers must have matching memory amounts as well. There are still some workarounds out there for that. Those workarounds do not work on Maxwell if I recall, so a GTX960 2GB can't be paired with a GTX960 4GB.
