So; a year or so ago from now I bought this computer pre-built, (i know, i suck) because I had no idea about anything from computers - So a year has passed and I start figuring out more and more about my computer and how much it sucks. It gets to the point where all these new games have come out and I can barely run them on medium/low graphics and so now I want to upgrade my CPU because I have found out it is holding me back, but now I have opened a whole kettle of fish i did not want to. I would like to upgrade my PC from a Pentium G3258 (Yes, i bought a pentium a year ago) to preferably an i5 Quad Core, the problem is my motherboard also seems to lack according to my friends analysis. I will list some of the stuff I know about my PC and links to it if anybody wants to dig deeper into how bad my PC actually is.

CPU/Processor
Socket - 1150 LGA (Haswell)
Spec - Intel Pentium CPU G3258 @ 3.20 GHz Duel Core
http://ark.intel.com/products/82723/Intel-Pentium-Processor-G3258-3M-Cache-3_20-GHz

Motherboard/Mainboard
Manufacturer - MSI
Model - Z87 G55
Chip - Intel
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z87-G55.html#hero-specification

GPU/Graphics
Manufacturer - NVIDIA
Type - GTX 750 Ti

This is pretty much all that I know that is relevant, according to my research my motherboard can only support 4th gen stuff, and the i5's now are 7th gen which leads me to believe its completely impossible. I have heard some things about the BIOS and that they can be change but I have no idea about anything of that. (https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/Z87-G55.html#!data=cpu-support - My BIOS)

So my question now is this; in order to upgrade my PC to actually run games decently now, will it require me to spend a whole load of money on another intel motherboard and then buying the CPU later on? I have bee told AMD are cheaper and better but I do not know to what extent that is true, i have seen them to be almost 2x cheaper but I'm sure it comes with a catch. If there is anything somebody can advise me on I'd greatly appreciate it as I am in dire need of help with this. If yes, what is the best way/cheapest way to do this without having to completely start from a fresh case/throwing away my current PC.
If there is any other information required I'll try my best to find it out if it is requested. Many thanks to those who help!

P.S: Sorry if this is in the wrong category.

Your motherboard would be fine to run with modern i5 processors such as the i5-4690 or the i5-4590 that being said if you want to run more modern games you may want to look into getting a newer graphics card or potentially look into getting a second 750 TI to sli bridge them.

On the note of AMD vs Intel that honestly is a personal choice AMD is better on the price side of things but tend to be more power consuming and Intel tend to be more expensive but normally are better at micro-processing (not useful for games)
