Need help booting from a USB DVD drive

Hello,
I am a first time PC builder. I decided to build in the NZXT S340, this case has no optical drive, so I bought a USB optical drive.
Here's the problem, the BIOS recognises that I have the USB optical drive plugged in, but when I try to boot from it, the screen goes black for about 5 seconds then returns to the BIOS screen. The USB optical drive has a copy of Windows 8.1 in it.

try hitting return while it sits waiting for 5 seconds as it may be waiting for you to do that.

Try hitting F10 at boot and it might bring up another boot menu where you could select the drive

Are you using the USB 2 slots?

It didn't work unfortunately. I have the USB optical drive in the USB 2.0 port now. On the "Boot Priority" section of the BIOS it recognises that my 1TB HDD, 250GB SSD and that the optical drive is plugged in, but when I try to boot from it, it goes to the black screen for 5 seconds then returns to the bios.

When you state "The USB optical drive has a copy of Windows 8.1 in it", (the "it" presumably a DVD disk), are you referring to the Win 8.1 OS installation disk containing the OS's setup files, or are your referring to an actual copy of the Win 8.1 program that had been previously created?

If the latter, ordinarily (although there are exceptions) the system will not boot to a OS installed on the USB device.

I assume he is trying to install of the DVD, not run windows from it. Good point though

What motherboard do you have? there might be other parts of bios that need to be changed to let it boot.

I have the ASUS Z170-A. I am trying to install Windows from a disc, not trying to run Windows from it, thanks for the help though

In view of the difficulty you're experiencing with installing the Win 8.1 OS with the installation DVD I wonder whether you should consider installing that OS with the Windows Media Tool (USB flash drive). See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15088/windows-create-installation-media

I would be completely happy to attempt doing this on a USB drive, can I download the Windows files from the Internet or do I have to do all of that stuff with putting the files from the DVD onto a USB?

I put the Windows files onto a USB, now when I click on it in the boot menu the screen goes black for less than a second then back to the bios, this is different from the 5 seconds I was getting from the USB DVD drive
