What's wrong with my optical drive?

I have had my PC that i built for a while now. When I was first building it had to install my operating system. I went to MicroCenter and bought my optical drive. I bought one for $15 that the employee said it was a very simple one. I just got a PC game on a disk for my birthday and it isn't showing up on my PC. Was the optical drive just really cheap and can only install windows?

Solution
Shouldn't be anything wrong with it. I have optical drives that are years old and still working just fine. If it's not showing up on your PC, it may be that the cable (either power or SATA/IDE) has come loose. I'd check that and see if it shows up on a reboot.

Solution
1. If you only used the optical drive to install Windows and now it doesn't detect the game disk, and ti doesn't show (the drive) in the Computer (Explorer), the issue may only be corrupted optical drive driver. Download or reinstall the driver from the included disk.

2. If the drive shows normally in Explorer.. the laser may have died out. Try different disks: music, data or hardware drivers disks. (cheap laser is probably the reason most optical drives are so cheap nowadays).

3. Possible solution: Go to the Device Manager and with a right click on the optical drive, click on "uninstall" and next restart the computer... the Plug and Play service should auto-reinstall the Optical Drive driver and may make it work again... this failing; install a fresh copy of the driver from the drive's disk or download a fresh driver update.
