new hard drive running slow

sometime ago i bought a new hard drive because my old one was getting full, i'm running the computer with both hard drives. The new one is recognized by the system and all, but everything that i install on it runs really slow and with some problems, takes a long time to see the files inside and some read/write errors happens when trying to download games or other things on it.

sorry for bad english, thanks.

Solution

It's not necessarily so, @Nuclearius! The HDD manufacturer should have their warranty policy on the official website, maybe you should check it out. You might as well contact them to ask about RMA-ing even though the drive was bought from another country. You got nothing to lose by asking, right?

Cheers,
SuperSoph_WD
Welcome to Tom's Hardware, Nuclearius!

I'd recommend you to check the connections to the HDD and try swapping the SATA cable that is currently connecting the drive. You should also try plugging it to another SATA port on the motherboard and see how it will perform afterwards. If you have access to another PC, I'd suggest you check how the HDD will be recognized there as well. If the problem is still present, I'd advise you to use the HDD manufacturer's brand-specific diagnostic tool to check up on the health and SMART status of the drive.

Good luck!
Cheers,
SuperSoph_WD :)

Going to add more info that may help: the old hard drive is a 1TB samsung HD103SI and the new and not working well one is a 2TB ST2000DM001-1ER164, a read error happens when I'm trying to use the benchmark of HD tune on it and it disappears from "computer" randomly.

I hope this helps. Thanks!

Hey there again, Nuclearius!

Did swapping the SATA cable and/or the port on the motherboard help you recognize the HDD for longer period of time without disappearing? What about accessing the drive from another computer? Another thing you could try (in case you don't have access to another PC) is connecting the problematic HDD externally via a SATA-to-USB cable (with an AC adapter) or docking station/enclosure. Hopefully, that will help you keep the hard drive detected longer.
Either way, don't forget to backup all your files from the HDDs beforehand! Copy them somewhere safe and sound before proceeding with the troubleshooting.

Hope it helps. Let me know how it goes! :)

The main problem is not it disappearing (it's actually rare), it's the disk write/read errors and i already tried other port and didn't work, I'm going to take a while to test the other options but i will answer as soon as I can.
Thanks

i tried everything except connecting the HDD externally and nothing actually changed, on disk management it shows it is NTFS but when i try to chkdsk it says it is RAW, i used gsmart control and in the first time the HDD was as unknown, the second time it was normal and the atributes were not indicating physical damage but the short self test was aborted as started, i don't know if this helps but i will send the output if i be able to. the read/write errors continue

Hello there again, @Nuclearius!

I'd advise you to try testing the HDD from another computer as well and see if the test will automatically abort again. Since it's a relatively new hard drive, you should still be able to get a replacement after you send an RMA request to the manufacturer's/reseller's customer support. It causes you way too many issues for a health drive. However, testing it from another PC will help you determine whether or not, it is the source of the problems.

Keep me posted with the chkdsk results as well, though.
Best of luck!

Hey there agian, @Nuclearius!

According to these specs, there's nothing wrong with the HDD really. However, I'd still advise you to run another SMART tool and benchmarking the results. Either way some of the values are way too high for a new hard drive. I'd strongly recommend editing your posts and erasing your HDD serial number as this is personal information and it's also sensitive for the hardware itself. You should, however, check the warranty on the product and see if it's still covered by the manufacturer or the reseller.

Don't forget to backup your files before proceeding with the troubleshooting, though.

Keep me posted with the other results. Good luck!

when i try to run HD tune on this HDD it crashes in the middle of the error scan and can you send me another SMART tool?
i don't have anything important in the HDD and it seems it suddenly has an error, the bad thing is that i bought it outside the country... so i can't get another in case this one is unrepairable.

where can i edit the post?

This sounds unfortunate, please make sure you make a full backup before you proceed with the HDD troubleshooting!
It's recommended to use the HDD manufacturer's BRAND-specific diagnostic utility. You should be able to find to find on their official website as well. Just make sure you run both the short and the long tests.
If the brand-specific tool is encounter the same problem during the diagnostic process, you should definitely consider replacing that drive. Since it relatively new, you should be able to easily RMA it and replace it through the manufacturer or the reseller.

P.S. You can either do a Quick or a Full edit to your posts. You should be able to find these customizing buttons at the end on the right bottom of your own posts.

Let me know what the test results show.
SuperSoph_WD

I'm glad that the HDD is passing the tests so far, @Nuclearius. Indeed, it's totally possible that the motherboard could be causing the issue. This could be a failed communication through the SATA cable (to the mobo) or the port on the mobo itself; or it could be a failed connection to the PSU. The best way to determine the source of the issue is to test the HDD in another computer and see how it will perform from there, or you could simply try connecting another drive to your system and check if you will experience the same slow speed.

Let me know how it goes.

the only other computer in my house is as old as this or even older, is there a way that i can test the compatibility between HDD and mother board or HDD and processor (a friend said that processor may be too, but i don't think it is because my processor is not so old)

How old exactly, @Nuclearius? If the motherboard incorporates SATA ports (even if they are SATA I (1.5 Gb/s) ones), your HDD should be compatible with it, even with slower speed. I'd recommend you check this on the motherboard manufacturer's official website or the mobo's manual itself. You should be able to see every detail about the hardware and its compatibility.

Hope it helps.

well, the new HDD transport supported is SATA 3.1 and the old one is ATA8-APT
is the specification support important? and the only original parts of this computer are the mother board and the old HDD, and they were bought something around 7-8 years ago.
