Hello there! People of the 'internets'! It's been a while since I've done a thread like this, but I need an inquiry about my Black and Red budget build. I would like to know if it's worth my time and money (Case and SSD already bought), and if there are any tweaks I can make to the build.

I am currently aware that the height of the case will not allow for it, but I've been looking at the Cooler Master V8 GTS for the color coding and cooling capability, although my case is a little too small for that Cooler.

Here's the list:
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/RWMJxY

CPU from Newegg: AMD FX-8350 8-Core processor. $159.99
Mobo from Newegg: MSI 970 AM3+ ATX. $99.99(No OC)
RAM from Newegg: Corsair Vengeance Pro 2x4 GB DDR3-2133. $43.99
HDD from Newegg: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM. $64.95
PSU from Amazon: Rosewill Glacier Series Semi-Modular. $44.99
GPU from BestBuy: MSI Geforce GTX 960 2GB. $214.99 (Was only color-coded MSI I could find, bit pricey)

Already Bought: 120 GB SSD for $41.70 and a SPEC-02 Corsair Case for $49.99
Total: $720.59
FYI, I'm a new builder, and have yet to construct and install my first PC. This will be the one!

Any pointers?

Solution
1) I would not build with AMD CPU's.

I suggest either the i5-4590 (Haswell) or i5-6400/6500 (Skylake) depending on the total build cost with system memory, motherboard etc.

2) I would also suggest WAITING and get an RX-480 graphics card when they launch and prices stabilize. You could build the rest of the system now and use the Intel iGPU (or a spare video card).

3) I'll attempt to make a quick build.

Well, this build isn't entirely meant for just gaming. I forgot to mention that in my notes. It's intended as a recording build. The CPU, while it may look daunting with the 8-core processor, is mostly for video rendering at max, and maybe even streaming on lower qualities. That was the purpose of the CPU.

Edit: After further research (my data was a little outdated), I agree. I won't be getting the money together until Mid-July, and Even at ~$230 it'll be better. Especially since MSI has released its statements. Thank you for the suggestions!

I looked at prices, and while this costs a little more due to the CPU, I think it's a much better way to go.

I could have put a cheaper motherboard in to compensate but for the price this Skylake board looks suitable for your red/black theme.

I also put in 16GB DDR4 memory. You can drop that to 8GB like you had before, though I'd keep 16GB to future proof if possible as it will benefit later, and doesn't add a lot to the cost.

*the RX-480 recommend isn't just about current performance. It's also much better suited to future DX12 titles than the GTX900 series. It also meets the requirement for VR support.

we don't have final info, but the RX-480 is probably up to 2X the performance of the GTX960

Yes, thank you. I reviewed some of the information on the GPU. It's a good choice ^.^

My question is: Will the processor be able to run the latest games (Since some of them require a core clock over 3.0-3.5 gHz in some cases), and is it going to perform any better than the FX 8350 in video rendering for the price?

Edit: Will you also be able to help with my CPU cooling debacle? (I like the CRYORIG series, but they're much harder to colorcode, with my current build height restrictions). I agree with the RAM, It's a much better choice. Weird tint though.

The FX-8350 matches the i5-6500 if it can use all of its threads, which it rarely can. The i5-6500 has 60% more processing per core so you'll see big differences in gaming and other programs in favor of the i5-6500.

Other than COST there's simply no good reason to go with the FX-8350. In fact, most people end up wanting to overclock due to this performance loss so have to add in a good CPU cooler which defeats the purpose of the cheaper CPU.

So again, the FX-8350 never wins (or if so by a very small amount) but often falls well behind.

(I recommended the i5-6400 due to a tight budget)

*If you spent $1000 total, then $50 is 5% of that budget. It's worth keeping that in mind when comparing how much faster the i5-6500 CPU is (total cost difference vs performance difference)

Alright, thank you for relieving my negative suspicions. It doesn't really add too much to the price of the build.

Now all that's left is to find a good CPU cooler to pop into this puppy, and we're in business! Thank you for your help this late at night :)

Well, I plugged in the new results: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/NKBQ7h

With all things considered, the build is only about $50 above my original budget of $750 with GPU predicted price calculated in. Not including the cooler of course. I think it's almost necessary to have a cooler over stock, for quiet gaming and sanity. Currently, my computer gives me headaches (Dell stock cooler with mismatching CPU from 2007, R7 240 4GB, loud 400W PSU and case fans... don't even get me started x.x), and I'm hoping this build might relieve some of that pain.

1) The Cryorig H7 can be found for $35USD or so, and should be pretty quiet with a proper fan profile setup.

2) I don't know much about that power supply.

I don't have any big issues with the build.

If you get an MSI RX-480 8GB card you may want to investigate if it has RGB lighting (if you care).

Good luck.
