What game to come back to MMO world?

So I've been thinking that I may give a try to start playing again some mmorpg, I really enjoyed the time spent a while back when I had a lot of spare time to play these kind of games and believe me I played A LOT. The thing is I have 2 works and a daughter now so I don't want to end up playing some shitty level grinding game like most MMO's out there.

What I'm looking for is something more story-driven than just killing monsters, besides like I said I don't have much time and I'm more of a solo player, don't do much PvP either.

I've been reading about ArchAge and Guild Wars 2 (which you can play for free now), and the last one I've played is Devilian. But I've also played a ton of games before like WoW, Lineage, Rift, Aion, TERA, Neverwinter, etc.

What do you guys think?

D&D, LOTR, if you like, although not a lot of players and it's a bit old, Asheron's Call 2, and the original Asheron's Call. AC was one of the first MMORPGs along with Ultima Online and Everquest and was the only one with a large seamless world where you can run for miles. I remember there was a higher level island you can get to at a lower level, but you had to run for about 30 minutes or more through some back-way and had to have some higher levels guide you so you don't die on way. Was a rite of passage in that game. Fun stuff before everyone started to get too good at MMOs and wanted to be "leet" and it became a grind to get the best stuff vs exploring and being clueless about things.

IIRC, you can only play the base or vanilla Guild Wars 2 game for free now. There is an expansion out there, Heart of Thorns, which can be bought. But there is no monthly subscription, buy it once and play all you want.

Personal opinion: You get better experience with games that require a monthly sub.

I wouldn't mind to pay just once, I just don't want to pay monthly, I have to admit though that those are probably better games.

I've played D&D and LOTR and I have to say they are GREAT games, enjoyed them a lot, I know Everquest it's kinda old also, I'm looking for something more "modern" actually and avoid "point and click" games if possible, modern MMOs have this "feeling of freedom" in combats which you really get used to it and don't want to come back to other style than that hehe

That is true sir, but some of them you don't need to farm monsters to level up all the time, you just level up through following main quests (storyline I guess).

Then give blade and soul a look, it has a full storyline.

Will do, it has just came out right?

I second guild wars 2, if your looking for a sub free experience. I found the story in blade in soul to be annoying.

Guild wars quest system keeps you moving and out in the world. You dont even need to seek out and return to quest givers. Everything you do gives good exp. And because the zones are level capped. You can easily pkay with friends without feeling like tou being power lvled

The freedom it offers compared to any other mmo is unmatched you can do anything you want. go anywhere you want with no boundaries if you want to start with your friend is a complete other race no problem just use the teleporter, its great the class system is super customizable no characters will play exactly the same even if they are the same class. All races have even there own race skills. there is just so much to do in it also i have 400 hours in the game and only have 60% of the map explored. The community is very active, dungeons are super fast to get into even for new players. Its just the best mmo i've ever played and i've played them all.
