I just recently got Comcast cable and I used the issued modem for a day before I switched to a Netgear N600 C3700 modem router, today. With the Comcast modem router, I set up one band (2.4Ghz) and was getting speeds of 100MBS+ but when I set up the Netgear's 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz bands, I'm only getting 20-30MBS and 40-50MBS respectively. Both tests for both modems were run on my PC and my phone and were all consistent. Is this normal? I was hoping to get the same speeds that the Comcast modems were giving me for the day I had it, yet now it's less. I don't know much about how it works so I'm hoping someone could explain whether this is normal or my modem router is not good and I should get something else. Thank you

You may want to consider if you will ever be interested in using a VPN service. If so, make sure the one you pick is DD-WRT compatible. Wish I knew this before I purchased my Motorola SBG6580. Other than that it works great.

There are a lot of variables involved, some of which you may not be able to see. First thing to note is that 5ghz radio can't penetrate as well as 2.4ghz and has a shorter range than 2.4ghz, so if you're going to use 5ghz, it's best to do it from a short distance. You will see better throughput at 5ghz if signal quality is good. Also consider the channel you're on. Some routers won't pick the best channels. You may be dealing with some interference from other devices on those channels.

Can you tell which channel you're using on which band, and if you have other devices using WiFi? If you have other WiFi devices, shut those off completely and perform your tests to reduce the chance of interference. If you have neighbors nearby with WiFi, that'll be harder to eliminate.

Based on where I have my modem router placed, my TV is closest to it and my PC is farthest away. With the 2.4Ghz, I'm on channel 11. I tried 1 & 6 and they ranged from 5-20MBS and channel 11 gives me 20-30MBS on my phone from any distance from the modem router and as well as my PC. 5.0Ghz is on channel 153 and gives me 40-50 MBS from my phone anywhere and my PC. My TV was off at the time I did the tests and I did test another phone and laptop later which gave similar results.
