Ok so I'm working on this pc (not my personal rig) it's specs are a gtx 560 ti (my old gpu) a 4 core amd athlon an fm2+ mobo a 1 terabyte hatachi drive (it is a bit old and has been used before, could it be the problem)?? A lower end 700 watt psu (I doubt it's the problem because I had issues when i tried using this low power amd 6450 gpu too). The last few days I've been trying to fix this one issue. I keep getting these display driver stoped responding errors. Sometimes I get a black screen too and am forced to hard shut down my pc. Also like half the time when I turn the pc on i get a display driver issue and I'm forced to hard reset my pc. I've corupted windows a few times and had to fix it with the instalation media because of this. I've reinstalled the game ready drivers a bunch and reset the pc multiple times (I didn't even want to reset it but I was forced to because the pc got all screwed up with all the hard resets that I did on it because I kept getting black screens) I did some stuff in the registry that I saw on this youtube vid that made the problem not as bad. But I still got the black screen a lot of the time when I turned the pc on (like when I shut it down and power it back up or restart it). I've been working on this for days and I'm still having problem.... what is causing this and how can I fix it????

Solution
Try installing the hd 6450 drivers logged on in the VGA Mode or Safe Mode. Both options should come up after pressing F8 right after the single BIOS beep.

Another option is: Before installing the GPU drivers, Set the monitor to a low resolution (EG: 400x600, 600x800, etc. depending on your monitor's default resolution) which should demmand little from the GPU and prevent the black screen

EDIT: If the screen keeps going black, try a different video cable, temporarily remove any mains, power strip, spike suppressor, or power regulator.

AC Power and video cable issues caused black screens in comments given here.

Hard Disk Sentinel should give an accurate idea on the HDD's condition.

If the HDD should turn out ok, update the GPU driver... "display driver stoped responding errors" half the time, probably means another issue is corrupting video drivers. That could be either infection, corrupted system files, or power issues.

1. The BIOS can get corrupted from repeated shutdowns, so reset it with battery removed for 5 to 10 minutes.

2. Scan for virus and malware

3. Run a SFC /Scannow check to detect and replace corrupted or missing system files. You'll need a Windows installation disk or usb so SFC refresh system files from.

4. Install CCleaner to do a registry cleanup, remove temp files, etc.

5. Run a CHKDSK C: /R in a Command Prompt window or from the C: drive properties > Tools

6. A disk defragg may help to smoothen and improve performance a bit.

7. Disable startup programs from Start > Search for MSCONFIG > Startup: disable all but the antivirus.
After all this, the remaining likely cause is a power issue or the GPU itself if the symptoms are different from the AMD 6450 GPU.

8. See if cleaning the PCIe slot helps.. Remove the AC power cord, use a clean cloth wrapped around a thin object like a paper clip and run it along the slot.. next wipe the GPU pins... lightly impregnate the rag with a bit of alcohol is available, and allow enough time for it to evaporate before powering up the computer.

9. Check power connections, try a different PSU.

thanks for the response. My hdd ended up being fine, I downloaded this free software that checked the readings of the smart technology of my pcs's hdd, the hdd is in "good health" status. I also defragged it. I had to reset the mobo for a different reason and the problem persisted even after the mobo reset. also apparently the ram was messed up(I did a ram test) so I got new ram into the pc and its still unstable with the 560 ti, Its might a psu issue but I rather not shell out 30+ dollars for a new psu if I have a other use for the 560 ti anyway(its 700 watts but isn't even a name brand or anything its just a 700 watt china special). but its stable for the most part with the amd hd 6450 now with the new ram. Up until I attempt to install the drivers, when I try to install drivers for the hd 6450 I got a black screen then I'm forced to hard shut down my pc. besides that the hd 6450 seems to be stable enouf (I still need to figure out how to install the display drivers without the black screen). I have a other use for the 560 ti anyway so I'm fine with the hd 6450, its ok for light gaming an I can just sell the pc for less. How can I go about installing the display drivers for the hd 6450 if I get a black screen that wont go away when I try to install them???(and the pc locks up). Is there a way that I can indirectly install them or something like that?????? Also at this point, I don't see how it can be a software issue, I reset/factory reset my pc multiple times(because my windows kept getting corrupted beacuse I kept having to shut the pc down with the power button when I got the black screens with the 560 ti)... I think multiple resets/factory rests and clean driver installs rules out any software issue. I think ill just try the 560 ti in a other pc and see if it has issues, if it works fine it will rule out the 560 ti being broken.

Some drivers you can and some you can't, depending on which are enabled or disabled in safe mode... display drivers are obviously enabled so you should be able to update it.

Check the EDIT I added to the previous answer... IF you missed it.
