So I bought a laptop and swapped out the 1TB HDD with a SSD. I put the 1TB HDD in an external hard drive enclosure. It works fine on my desktop and my other laptop. However the laptop that I removed the 1TB HDD from will not read it. It pops up in the device manager as "Usb mass storage deivce" but doesn't show up anywhere else. What's going on? Maybe the laptop still recognizes it as the old factory HDD still? I did just clone it with samsung software. I was going to use the reset this pc function in windows 10 but it tells me it can't find a recovery environment or something like that. I have no idea what to do now. Help please.

I appreciate you and D_Know_WD's replies. Unfortunately the HDD doesn't appear in the list in disk management. Also I would install usb drivers but literally every little usb stick I have laying around works in this laptop as well. The only one that doesn't work is the external HDD made up of the laptops old HDD.

In my view, there are not many possible causes, given the fact the drive works on other systems.

- Drivers.
- Not enough power supplied by the ports. Have you tried all the USB ports? In case you have one of those Y type of USB cables, you can try that as well.

Apart from that, you can just back up all the data stored on the drive and reformat it.

Ok awesome thank you guys. I fixed it. To get the hard drive to actually show up in the disk manager I had to first go to the DEVICE manager and go to the hard drives properties and populate it. After that I found out the hard drive was "offline" so in disk manager I turned it back online, reformatted and now it works like a charm. thank you all for shoving me in the right direction.
