How to get dual monitor on HDMI and DVI Projector on Win 10

I'm trying to help a friend run HDMI to his computer monitor and DVI to his Projector as his second monitor. We had it running just fine on Win 7 pro with both DVI going to both. But his new computer only has One HDMI and one DVI output. Windows10 will not recognize the DVI and we are out of ideas on what to do besides go back to Win7. Here's the system specs

AMD A10-7850K APU with Radieon R7 Graphics 3.70 Ghz
8 GB of Ram
Win10 64 bit.

UPDATE: It's a DVI to VGA adapter that goes to the projector. I don't know if that makes a difference.

What motherboard is it specifically? Or laptop... the reason I ask is that normally , you cannot run BOTH the DVI and and HDMI outputs at the same time on those systems from an APU... normally you would use a DP to HDMI active adapter in that scenario (provided you had DP output available)

I had the same problem on my wife's laptop with Windows 10 and this solved the problem getting a projector to work correctly.
