Is the XEON E5-2670 the best budget CPU?

Solution

not really the mobo has a bunch of screw holed but tyhe socket only has 4 nuts (not sure about the dell board) and if your asking if the 1/2 inch foamed pvc is stable, YES the pvc is stronger than wood and their are 3/4 inch bolts and nuts holding my mobo on

they only did that on skylake chips xeons run on x99 just fine. and they were subsituted as e3 xeons for i7's e5 xeons dont really compare to i7's as they are true xeons with no matching chip and normally higher binned silicon and more cores.

their are afew things you should know about dell mobos,
their holes are not standard to any form factor
neither is their size
and you will either have to buy the frount io panel or spend alot of time searching for pins to turn it on

its ok if you believe you can and you will save abit of money plus it is dual socket so you can enjoy 32 tthreads

yeah i rather not have to deal with custom case modding.

Found this one and i can use 288pin ram with it.

Glad your here dont think many people know about these chips.

Something else to consider is making sure to get the right motherboard for it.

Not everything is compatible and the older motherboards can be difficult to get ahold of sometimes. Xeons will run fine on x99 if they're a 2011v3 chip, otherwise no they won't. People often think they get a smoking deal by going old with extreme cpu's and if it suits their needs then yes it's a good deal. Otherwise it's just outdated performance. The 2670 is not only behind in terms of ipc but the clock speeds are pretty shabby by today's standards. 2.6 up to 3.3 and likely won't reach the 3.3 when several of the cores are fully loaded. It will drop slower. 4790k up to 4.4ghz, 6700k up to 4.2ghz - both before overclocking. They're a full ghz faster.

Being a dual socket doesn't automatically mean 16c/32t, software has to be coded specifically to use dual cpu configurations. Multi-cpu isn't the same as multicore. If the software isn't coded to access multiple cpu sockets then may as well be running a standard single socket mainstream setup. Corporations often times like to dump these chips for dirt cheap because they've ran the snot out of them in servers for the past 4 1/2yrs. Just make sure you know what you're getting into and what you're after with them is all.

that is a 2011 v3 mobo its a different socket than 2011 and will not work with a 2670

Going to look at some used server stuff as Getting a motherboard for 360$ does not seem like the best Deal now ;-( Hopefully I can find a Server that can crossfire so I can can get a cheap video editing build. not really worried about sound as I can put it in the basement and network to it from my main PC.

just stay away from dell servers if you can the often dont support a dedicated gpu

I ended up putting a offer in for a Dell Precision T5610. Hopefully is will be accepted. if it is i'm going to drop some 2670's in it and a SSD. Then ether do some crossfire 480's or 980ti's. need to see the opencl performance of the 480s before i decided.

If it's not accepted i'm back at stage one. might make my own custom case then and just do the dell mobo
dell mobo 200$
2x xeon 2670's 120$
1000w psu 100$
Wood base 60$
Memery 2x4gb ecc rdimm 21$ going to get 32gb's
Some windows other then 10 and 8 maybe 7
