I have a really strange problem that started a few weeks ago and I can't seem to find the answer to anywhere online. Whenever I connect to my WIFI network my devices connect fine but they don't have an internet connection. The errors are similar to other issues, Chrome says DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET so of course I tried restarting my modem and my router which didn't work. My router is a dual-band router and the weird thing is that when I switch from the network I'm currently connected to to the other (e.g. 2.4 ghz to 5 ghz or vice versa) the internet usually will start working on that device. So I do have a workaround but aside from the annoyance of this problem my Dell desktop pc doesn't have Dual-Band WiFi so I have not been able to connect to through that computer.

I tried doing a hard reset of my router back to factory settings but that didn't change anything. It seems like a router problem but I have searched all over online for possible solutions most of which focused on changes on the computer side but I tried whatever I could find including:
- Enabling/Disabling IPV6
- netsh winsock reset
- Redirecting DNS to google address (8.8.8.8)
- Release IP
- Troubleshoot with Comcast (cable ISP) who confirmed that everything was working on their end and that my modem is working fine as well.
- And more, but I don't remember all of them

Some more information, I have only been able to test my devices over wifi as none of my devices have an ethernet port, my current devices are:
- Motorola Surfboard cable modem w/ Comcast internet
- Netgear AC1750 dual band router (R6400)
- Dell Desktop - only uses 2.4gHz WiFi so I can't switch between networks
- Dell laptop - dual band so I can get the internet to work as stated above
- iPhone and iPad - same
- FireTV Stick - same

Also, over the last few weeks I have been able to get my Desktop connected to the internet maybe 3 times while playing around with things but it never lasts more than a few hours and then I can't get it back even doing the same thing that seemed to work before. I am not very knowledgeable about networking but typically doing enough google searching answers my questions, but not this time so any help is greatly appreciated!

Solution
seems like your router is problematic, maybe a firmware update may save you from buying a new one. You can set a static ip to all devices but i would only do that if i hadn't the money to buy a new one. Glad i helped you mate!

so you can connect to your router but can't get internet correct?
Do this test while connected to router.
-First type ipconfig and tell us if it is on the 192.168.x.x range or you get an ip like 169.x.x.x .
-If your ip is in 192.168.x.x range and matching your routers ip (like if your router's ip is 192.168.1.1 your computer ip must be something like 192.168.1.2), run 2 ping tests.
ping 8.8.8.8
ping www.google.com

Try those and keep us posted!

Thanks for the response Slyverine. Results:
After running ipconfig
Default Gateway ... <BLANK>
IPV4 Autoconfiguration .... 169.XXX.X.X

So I tried ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew and now it shows a Default Gateway of 192.168.1.1, but when I pinged www.google.com i get the message "Ping request could not find host www.google.com. Please check the name and try again." When I ping 8.8.8.8 it just hangs for several minutes and never returned any results.

Also in the ipconfig results it says "Media State : Media Disconnected" several times.

Hi Flava, Could you actually post the Ipconfig screenshot here.
It seems that the DHCP service of your router isnt working.

Can you confirm that you have separate Modem and router. Also mention their Model Details.

When you Type Ipconfig /release then you will see media disconnected.
When you type Ipconfig /renew it should say IP like 192.168.1.xxx
If you are getting IP like 169.254.xxx.xxx then DHCP service of your router isnt working.

your dhcp isn't working. check the settings in your router if the dhcp is working, set a static ip to your pc if you can't connect to it.Setting a static ip to your pc may solve your problem but this is not a good fix because other devices will have problem. If the router dhcp is enabled, then maybe it's time to change router!

I don't see a way to post a screenshot but my router is enabled to "Use Router as DHCP Server" using 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254.

So I changed my desktop to use a static IP and DNS, and that PC works for now! I will check again when I get home from work. But like you said any device that doesn't have a Static IP will continue to have problems when I connect right? I have only had my router for 6 months and I thought it was a pretty decent one (Netgear R6400) so I would be bummed to have to replace it already. Do you think that's what I need to do though?

Thanks for helping me figure this out!
