Hello there, I am going to replace my wd black 2 tb 7200 rpm with either wd blue or wd red (those who say wd red is good for nas, will it be good on a desktop comp? What would you choose that prioritize quietness and less noise? Plz give me a real advise as my wd black is making noise like a washer... it's time for the replacement. Plz don't delete my thread as I need ur honest wording.

Ok, first WD Black is about the fastest desktop traditional hard drive that there is and either the blue or red will be slower. What I would do is purchase an SSD and install my Operating System on it and then purchase a WD Red or a Seagate NAS drive to store your files on. Even a cheap SSD would run faster than a new WD Black, Blue, or Red so you'll feel the speed. Also with keeping your data on a second physical drive, if you need to reinstall your OS at any time, your files will be safe. Good luck. Oh, for SSDs, I recommend the Samsung 850 EVO or 750 EVO. I've also had decent luck with the Mushkin Eco2, but the Samsungs are better.

Hi there Computer Boy,

Does your WD Black make some unusual noises? In case it does, it may be a good idea to back up the data stored on it.
After that, you can check its health status out. Run both short and extended DLG tests: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=W1YcZY

Another thing you can try is to attach the drive with different cables to another SATA port. Make sure it is tightly fastened.

Even though WD Black has slightly higher acoustics levels, it shouldn't really be that annoying.

Yeah, you can use WD Red in a desktop. It just has some features that make it more suitable for RAID environment.

Keep in mind that you will get poorer performance compared to WD Black.

You can just compare the seek and idle acoustics levels of all three drives:
WD Black: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=4jwQxc
WD Red: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=bipyhL
WD Blue: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=Wv0rmU

Let me know in case you have some more questions,

Hey d know wd. My pc was assembled by a local shop and they said sounds were picky. how inferior is the red to black? How about the blue? With respect to noise, which one out of these three drives is durable?

Are we talking about 2 TB drives?

WD Black - 7200 RPM. It features dual core processor as well.
WD Red - 5400 RPM
WD Blue - 5400 RPM ( If it is the 1 TB model, then it would be 7200 RPM)

Also, you can check the performance data in the spec sheets I've already provided.

When talking about reliability and durability, I would say that every drive could fail in a day, or on the other hand work hard for 5 - 10 years. You should always back up your data.
Anyways, here are the warranty periods of the drives.

WD Black - 5 years.
WD Red - 3 years.
WD Blue - 2 years.

To sum it up, all three drives will do the job. They just have different characteristics and features.

Thank you wd for your replies. I compared all of them @ and it appears red is the quietest one. When they say it's built for nas. Can I still use it for desktop or go with the blue?
