Hello there I have a problem which I am hoping someone who has more experience with networking will be able to answer.

I currently have my router in the hallway under the stairs (not the best place but it means wifi reaches the whole house and it's where the phone line is located) however my desktop computer is in my office which is on the same floor but in another room. I want to have internet on this computer but I don't want an Ethernet cable running through the hallway as this is very messy. There is a second phone line port here which is an extension of the main port, so my question is can I use this to plug in an old router I have and set it up to the same network and run the Ethernet cable from this old router instead? I would obviously want this to work wirelessly with the main router but I am not sure if this is possible.

Thanks in advance

what are the make and model #s of the routers?

Depending on the the type of phone cable that was used, you cannot use it as a network cable. For It to properly work it should be a CAT5 cable which comes with four pairs of wires. Some phone cables are only CAT3 and come with two pairs of wires.

If the network cable does not work, can you use a wireless network card?

Thanks for the reply, the main router is a BT Home Hub 5, and I'm not sure what the other router is as I haven't got it out yet.

Is there a way to check if it is a cat5 or cat3 cable?

Yeah a wireless card is my backup, and I will purchase one if I cannot fix the problem with the equipment I've already got.
