Create NAS that may be accessed remotely much like Google Drive

I am looking to build my own NAS. I have been using Google Drive for a long time and I like the way that it has its own folder that acts just like any other folder on my system.

Long story short I am looking to create something similar. I want to keep the NAS at my house connected to my network, and be able to access it like any other drive (securely) while I am away at school.

Inside of the NAS I am hoping to have two 2TB WD Red drives in RAID 1.

Is a setup like this possible to achieve? So far the closest things I have come across are the WD MyCloud Mirror (though I would like to build my own system), or something like ownCloud.

If you build a nas with either NAS4free or FreeNAS you access the os via a web browser. Now the NAS os have options and protocols for remote access, that is certain. You will probably have to fiddle with it a bit until you get it right.
