Hi everyone,

For the first time I can't find an answer to my problem anywhere on this forum so here goes nothing:

2 weeks ago my pc started having issues. It would sound like it booted like always, normal post (one beep) and the windows login tune (or whatever it's called). However my screen was black. This issue didn't go away with a reboot and some research led me to the hiberfil.sys file and the sleep button on my keyboard saved my life. I got the error message about the memory map and a problem with the hyberfil.sys file (as expected). The PC rebooted normally again and worked perfectly fine.

Until 2 days ago. The problem returned and with a vengeance. After 20 sleep button presses it finally showed something on screen and the same error message (no error code, just the message that there was a problem with the memory map, whatever the beep that might be). I tried to fix the problem by disabling hibernation in the cmd (powercfg -h off) as suggested on some forum. Tried to reboot and again a black screen (not even the asus logo before the windows startup) but again windows logon sound. But now my sleep button doesn't work anymore and my screen stays black. This is a problem as I can't change any settings on a black screen.

So here's what I tried already:

-about 150 restarts
-disconnected everything from the usb ports
-tried going into bios which i think it did but still black screen.
-tried the windows boot usb - but I can't set it to boot from that as my screen is black.
-different monitor.
-disconnected the powersupply for 10 hrs (suggested on another forum)

My pc:

I5-4440
Asus Z97-k
Sapphire r9 290
8gb ram
Seasonic 620w psu
120 gb ssd (samsung)
2 tb hdd

So ANY tips on what might fix this would be greatly appreciated!

Solution
Perhaps if you mash the power key a few times when it starts up, you'll get the option of StartUp Repair and that might break through whatever is blocking your graphics. On that note, do you have onboard and add-on graphics cards and if so, try the alternative to the current setup.

Final shot (for now) the machine I'm now has Sleep and Wake Up buttons. Is yours the same or does one key toggle?
First off, changing the Hibernation setting does not affect the screen brightness. If you can hear Windows it may be you have a connectivity problem with the screen or perhaps yor brightness Functions have been moved around.

Windows hibernation is a mess and causies many problems and I disable it using
powercfg /hibernation off
at least twice a week for different customers.

Second point - hibernation and sleep are distinctly different actions so I don't know what your sleep button does but none of mine in three Windows machines here do anything except bounce back up and down. My Linux Mint system turns off the screen when I press sleep.

Any clues there? Do you have a spare monitor to test things?

Thanks for your answer!

Well I think there is nothing wrong with the brightness. I just have no video. As i said, i have tried a different monitor. Still a black screen.

I don't know either what my sleep button did. All I know is that it was my only option to fix this problem. Now that it doesn't work anymore my screen stays black and I have no option of changing any settings.

Again, thank you for your answer and any help would be greatly appreciated!!
