Lots of posts about issues with DisplayPort use and the GeForce 970 GTX, but after reading many of them, I now have a variation on the problem(s). I'm able to get the DisplayPort to work with my Viewsonic VP2772, sort of. After Windows 10 boots, I see the splash screen, and I'm able to click in the lower left corner to start apps, etc. But, any app I open (including the nVidia Control Panel) stays minimized on the tool bar across the bottom. I cannot do anything with any app, short of shut the machine down. This was a fresh build, all new components and a brand new retail copy of Win 10 distributed on a flash drive. I'm considering reinstalling Windows. Any thoughts?

Well you guys were a bunch of help! After trying every logical (pun intended) approach, I resorted to the one thing I wanted to do least of all - reinstall Windows. This time, I did one thing differently, I connected my monitor to the video card using the DisplayPort first, before starting the Windows reinstall. That was it. The install routine apparently found the secret sauce on it's own, and all is well. I now have achieved my intended goal, 10 bit color depth. The reason I purchased the Viewsonic VP2772 monitor in the first place.
