Will a m.2 adapter affect pci-e speeds

I want to buy a NVME SSD using a m.2 to pci-e adaptor but I am concerned that it may slow down my GPU as the specs for my Z97 PC Mate motherboard says support x4/x4 mode does that mean my GPU will only run at x4 mode if I use the m.2 adaptor in the other pci-e slot causing reduced performance from my GPU?

-2 x PCIe x16 slots
-PCI_E2 supports PCIe 3.0 (GPU is in this slot]
- PCI_E4 supports PCIe 2.0
- Support x16, x4/x4 modes

thing is with intel you got to look at the board and how the manufacture ''wired it up'' and weed things out unlike AMD theres is all run through the chipset gpu and all

Ya should see a difference at all if ya got enough PCI express lanes normally you only see bus speed of graphics cards get knocked down is if your running sli
If main boards got say 42 PCI express lanes or 40 ya can run 2 vid cards at full x16 mode in both slots and still have room to run a m.2 or PCI express ssd or m.2 in PCI express adapter at x4 witch would put ya at 36 PCI express lanes being used

Though the do have boards that are starting to route the m.2 pathways straight to the CPU itself with then doesn't use your PCI bus then it be up to the CPUs support for total PCI express lanes then
 
it depends if the m2 is shared with any of the slots used or how the boards slots are ''wired''

so the pci-e on intel is run through the cpu [16lanes] if the m2 shares on that it wll run a 8x4x4 if the m2 run through the chipset then the cpu lane is not affected and will remain at x16

that's how and what it all depends on

The chipsets is on the board is it not comes down to board a cpu plain and simple like I said . The complicated part is locking up the full specs for your board and understating em we were both saying the same thing just in a different way
