Hello! I have a question regarding my build. I currently have AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE and GTX 960. And I'd like to upgrade my processor to FX- 8350...since I'd like to have best possible performance with my GTX 960.
At this point I cannot replace my motherboard inorder it to be compatible with Intel. Any ideas if FX 8350 will be enough? For AM3+

Thanks in advance!

I highly doubt you'd see any noticeable improvements upgrading an old 965 to an old 8350.

Even then you'd need an AM3+ compatible motherboard.

If you're talking gaming performance it's simply better to save and buy a lowly intel i3 6100 or i3 4170 for faster performance in basically everything you'll be doing, plenty of cheap motherboards out there.

If you're doing video rendering, etc. it "might" be worth getting a 8350. Might.

TW: Attila is going to be much more dependent on your GPU than your CPU -- when a Skylake i7 can only get to 35 FPS @ 1080p (Ultra) on a GTX 980, but the FX-8370 isn't too far behind with 30 FPS at the same settings, & you see a similar spread going all the way down on lower GPUs as well, it's pretty obvious that the game is heavy on the GPU side. You can also see, though, that on this game the FX chip will outperform the 6-core Phenom II (also confirmed in other benchmarks, http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/146?vs=697), & that X6 chip is roughly comparable to your 965 (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/146?vs=102). So, at least for this game, you should see measurable improvements by swapping out your 965 for an FX-8350 or 8370.

The issue with switching to the i5, as well, is you will have to reinstall Windows from scratch, since it's a brand-new motherboard & completely different hardware. If you just pop in an FX chip, however, Windows will simply update its CPU drivers & proceed without a hiccup.

That's not exactly true..

I've swapped drives between many Intel/AMD systems and had success without even having to do anything.
All depends on the chipset and controllers.

Or you can simply enable windows OOBE, then do the drive swap. That always works for me.
Here's a howto: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/making-sure-windows-7-will-boot-after-changing-the-motherboard/

Thank you for your replies! I've decided to try out i5 with it's motherboard. Now all I have to do is to add my additional RAM and HDD's. Will it be a problem with windows 8.1 as spdragoo mentioned or Faux_Grey's solution suffice? Because I will only add my ram, gpu and hdd's to that motherboard (with i5)

I'd first try your current hard drive in the case with the new components to see if it boots fine.
If it doesn't boot and it crashes/BSODS then put the hard drive back in the old pc and perform an OOBE setup.

Once it boots in the new motherboard, then perhaps move over your RAM/GPU/etc.
